Our forefathers understood the power of catechisms. They were present in their churches, homes, and textbooks. (The first textbook of America, the New England Primer, includes such catechisms.) Today, these lists of questions and answers are seen by many as archaic and odd. What a loss this is. Just as we are to put the Scriptures on the tongues of our children, so also, through catechisms, we can put the truths and doctrines of the Scriptures on their tongues and in their hearts. Recite these with your children, bit by bit, so that like Timothy it can be said that from infancy your children were familiar with the Scriptures and truths of God.
