The Bible tells us to be in the world, but not of the world. God doesn’t call us to escape the world geographically. He calls us to a different mindset. God wants our heart to not be aligned with this world, but rather with His Kingdom.
Needless to say, this isn’t always easy. We live in a culture that is very demanding. Everything wants our time, money, participation, and heart. Behind it all is the enemy, trying to get us to conform to his ways, his agenda, and his kingdom. So how do we win? How do we stay true to God by not conforming to this world? There are many good answers that God gives us in response. I would like to just quickly mention one: We live in light of eternity.
500 years from now no one is going to care about how much money they had, if they were a great people pleaser and popular, or whether their home looked like the cover of the latest magazine. They are not going to care about the 2014 politics, sports, or stock market. All that will matter to us, 500 years from now, is whether or not we pleased our King.
The teaching of Scripture is simple, yet powerful: We must make it our #1 goal to please our King, because we know that He holds our future in His hands. Let’s not get wrapped up in the trivial and temporary pursuits of this world. Let’s live for the eternal.
